Hadrian's Wall and the Wigwam Orchard

Still struggling to find a decent campsite open this time of year, we did a bit of research and found some really cool little wooden wigwams available for hire just outside Newcastle near the village of Heddon-on-the-Wall.

For £34 a night, you get heating, lighting, electricity, a kitchenette (with fridge, kettle, microwave and toaster) and really nice facilities nearby with rainforest-style showers. We thought it was quite a good deal. There was also a hen wigwam where you could collect eggs for free.

The reason we stayed in this location was that we wanted to see a part of Hadrian's Wall while we were up this way. Unfortunately the best bits of the wall are all in the countryside in the very middle of the country, and we didn't want to detour to see them, so we just found a bit of surviving wall nearby to the wigwams to visit.

The people who live in those houses at the top get a lovely view over the wall. It is massive, you really can't believe that the Romans thought it would be a good idea to build this the whole width of the country. I really like the fact that so many of the houses and churches round here have been built from pilfered bits of the wall.

The sun has come out for us too, about time! So, with our nice dry tent, it's time to start camping again!
